Abstract
Cancer is a public health problem. In 2020, one in six deaths in the world occurred from this cause, among the most frequent are: breast cancer, lung cancer, colorectal and prostate cancer, maintaining the same order in Mexico. This chapter describes the genetic and environmental factors as well as their molecular mechanisms that give rise to cancer, including the hereditary syndromes related to the most frequent types of cancer and the approved treatments based on actionable molecular biomarkers. Knowledge of the genetic-molecular basis of cancer contributes substantially to its medical approach; on the other hand, identifying the environmental and lifestyle factors that affect its development is essential to reduce the risk of developing cancer.

Abstract: Lipoproteins are specialized particles involved in the transport and distribution of hydrophobic lipids, as cholesterol and triglycerides, throughout the body. The lipoproteins exhibit a basic spherical shape as complexes of lipids and proteins, and these latter are known as apolipoproteins. Initially, the proteins associated with lipoproteins were recognized as integral or peripheral proteins that only maintain the dynamics and metabolism of lipoproteins. However, there exist many studies on different lipoproteins evidencing that the quantity and type of apolipoproteins and lipoprotein-associated proteins are diverse and could be associated with different lipoprotein function outcomes. Here, we summarized recent processes in the determination of apolipoproteins and lipoprotein-associated proteins profiles through a proteomic approach, analyzing the major methods available and are used to achieve this. We also discuss the relevance of these lipoproteomic analyses on the human disease outcomes.

Mirtazapine: Multitarget strategies for treating substance use disorder and depression

Title: Mirtazapine: Multitarget strategies for treating substance use disorder and depression
Authors: Barbosa Mendez, Susana; Becerril Villanueva, Luis Enrique; Ponce Regalado, María Dolores; Salazar Juárez, Alberto
Abstract: Abstract For the past decades, several antidepressants have been explored as possible therapeutic drugs to relieve SUD. Mirtazapine is an approved atypical medication for the treatment of moderate to severe MDD. However, several studies indicated that the dosage program, consisting of a dose of 30mg/kg of mirtazapine, administered for 30 days or more during the early phase of withdrawal does not cause sedation, leads to a decrease in the symptoms of depression and anxiety during prolonged periods of drug withdrawal, and generates a permanent reduction (even in the absence of mirtazapine) of the behavioral effects induced by simple or combined drug use in rodents and humans. These studies support the efficacy of mirtazapine in reducing the behavioral reinforcing effect induced by a wide variety of drugs. Mirtazapine meets the characteristics of a multitarget drug, which suggests that it can be used either in future clinical trials or as a key molecule design new drugs.

Dementia is an heterogenous clinical condition that is currently considered a public health problem because its prevalence increases with age. Due to the significant aging of the world population, we must be prepared to meet disease of the advanced age, such as dementia, as they impair cognitive functions to significantly impact the quality of life.
